Catholic Youth Care Adventure Club Network.
CYC Adventure Clubs Network is run by the Adventure Sports Department of CYC. The Adventure Sports Department (formerly the “Outward Bound" Department) has been offering adventure sports programmes to the young people of Dublin for over 20 years. In the last few years, due to increased funding, we have been able to increase our staff and change our emphasis from running once off programmes to offering a more sustained and developmental service through our adventure clubs.
There are now 7 CYC Adventure Clubs running in the city, which were officially launched as a Network in 2007 in the Mansion House. The current clubs are; Dublin City AC in conjunction with the Aisling project, NEIC AC with LYCS, Rathmines AC with Rathmines Community Partnership, South City AC with YMCA & Finglas South, East & West with CYC’s Finglas Youth Service. There are 2 more clubs in the planning with Sphere 17 & Bradog Youth Services & 3 independently run clubs in Ballyfermot, North Wall & Artane. The Network was set up to link all existing Adventure Clubs into one network with common aims and objectives, development goals, training and standards. In addition, the Network was set up to open up new clubs in new locations to allow us to increase access to and youth participation in Adventure Sports.
The CYC Adventure Clubs Network offers services to all the clubs in its Network in order to allow them to grow and develop. Services include; Yearly Training Programme, Fundraising Assistance, Accounts Services, Annual Events, Website, Administration and Committee Assistance, Adventure Sports Staffing & Adventure Sports Resources The clubs strive to continue to improve the range of exciting and challenging activities available in our clubs, which ensures the young people really enjoy the experiences and gain from the challenges. This acts like a carrot on a stick to keep members involved.
Young people are looking for something dynamic, a challenge that’s exciting to be apart of and adventure sports clubs offer them this. Adventure sports offer both physical and mental challenges that are exciting with an aspect of discovery, adventure and personal development without competitive pressure or fear of failure. This is apparent in the positive feedback we receive when consulting with the young people involved in our clubs.
Adventure Sport activities, by their challenging nature can be valuable, bonding and learning experiences for young people. These new challenges of having to work together and having to overcome fears as a team, create memorable shared experiences which in turn create real lasting friendships.
Our adventure clubs regularly run adventure trips to new and spectacular locations both in Ireland and abroad such as snowboarding in Andorra or surfing in Achill Island This can broaden horizons and stimulate the imagination which is very important in motivating young people to do and see more.
Adventure sports clubs also offer an alternative education through experiential learning that is both appealing and beneficial. As each individual grows and progresses in the club we will offer them leadership and Instructor training and give them the opportunity to become future leaders for the club, or take Outdoor Education up as a career.
With the growth and success of our Adventure Clubs in the Finglas area we have now set up a permanent base there and are currently trying to source funding for an Adventure Sports Officer for Finglas. Running such clubs in a safe and professional manner does involve continually sourcing funding for both equipment and staff, which is a constant battle to give young people the opportunities to experience adventure.
