The White House- New Youth Centre
A great new youth facility -The White House- was open recently in Ballogan by Dundrum- Rathdown Youth Service. ‘The White House’, Ballyogan’s new youth building, was opened on Thursday 21st May 2009 by An Leas Cathaoirleach Councillor Lettie McCarthy. It was attended by representatives from County Dublin VEC, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, Catholic Youth Care and young people from Ballyogan. Eric Hickey, a member of the youth committee, was a very able MC for the evening. The new building is funded and supported by Young People’s Facility and Services Fund through Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and County Dublin VEC. Dundrum Rathdown Youth Service (DRYS) provides youth programmes for the Ballyogan area; the Ballyogan Youth Project and the Castle Project (Garda Youth Diversion Programme). Young people aged 10 to 18 years from the area are using the building from Monday to Friday (2pm to 9pm) and also Saturday afternoons (2pm to 6pm). The youth work programmes include: the arts, adventure sports, active citizenship, inter-cultural programmes, personal deelopment and drug and alcohol awareness programmes.
It was heart-warming to see so many organisations and groups present including An Garda Siochana, the VEC, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, the HSE, young people from the area, the local resource centre and CYC staff. It reflects the importance of the youth service in the area and the constructive relationship that DRYS has with the many individuals, groups and organisations that care for young people. The evening was a great success and the work on display was hugely admired.
