World Youth Day was first set up by the late Pope John Paul II. World Youth Day is a festival and celebration of young people and their Catholic faith.
It brings together young people from all over the world to one place, as one, with one Lord and Saviour,to dance, to sing and to pray their faith.

Each World Youth Day is celebrated in a different city, giving a chance to all young people to come together in faith.
In 2011 it was help in Europe in Madrid. In 2013, it comes to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Each World Youth Day has a theme - a central unifying thought. For Rio it is "Go and make disciples of all nations" (Mt 28, 19).
This is a central theme of Matthew's Gospel - indeed of the whole New Testament. But in our world, with its many attractions, with its differing and competing viewpoints and faiths, what does it mean to make disciples of people and nations. This is a theme that needs reflection and thought because it goes to the very heart of what it means to be a follower of Christ in the modern world.
